Privacy policy
Peekaroo lets you share your location with friends you both agreed on. This page explains what we store and why.
What we collect
- The account identifier from Sign in with Apple or Google, and your email if the provider gives it to us.
- Your username, display name and profile photo.
- Your precise location, its accuracy, your battery level and whether you are moving, while sharing is on.
- Your device's push notification token.
- For messages: the public keys of each phone you use Peekaroo on, and encrypted copies of messages waiting to be delivered, which we cannot read.
Who sees your location
Only people you have accepted as friends, and only in the way your hide mode allows. Nobody else can see it, including Peekaroo administrators. Location is never sold or used for advertising or tracking.
Location history is off by default. If you turn it on (Settings, Location history), the friends you choose, or all your friends, can see where you have been over the last 31 days: the places you stayed and the way between them. Time you spent hidden from a friend never appears in their view, and you can turn it off at any time.
Your friends list
Only you see your friends list unless you share it (Settings, My friends list). The friends you choose, or all your friends, then see who else you are friends with and the tags you gave them, and can send them a friend request. You never appear in anyone's shared list while your profile is private or while Show me in friends' lists is off. The person you gave a tag to never sees it.
Maps and routes
The Map and Satellite views come from Apple Maps; the 3D view comes from Mapbox. To draw a map, your phone asks the map provider for the area on your screen, as any map app does: the provider sees that area and your device's IP address, not who you are or where your friends are. Mapbox's usage statistics are switched off in Peekaroo.
When you ask for a route to a friend, our server asks Mapbox for it with two points only, where you are and where your friend is, and no account, name or device identifier. The route and the points are not stored.
Messages
Messages and photos you send to friends are end-to-end encrypted on the phones: your phone locks each one so that only your friend's phones (and your own other phones) can open it. Our server only ever holds encrypted copies it cannot read. Peekaroo administrators can't read your messages either.
Your conversation history is stored only on your phone. If you delete the app or move to a new phone, your chats start empty. To deliver messages, the server keeps the public keys of each phone while you are signed in on it.
A notification about a new message says only who it is from, never what it says. You can turn these off in Settings, Notifications, Messages.
If you report a message, that one message (its text, sticker or photo) is sent to Peekaroo moderators, only after you confirm. No other message can be read by anyone at Peekaroo.
Messages from Peekaroo
We may send you news and important announcements. You can turn them off in Settings, Notifications, Messages from Peekaroo. Warnings from our moderators are always delivered.
Crash reports
When Peekaroo crashes or freezes, your iPhone writes a short report: where in Peekaroo's code it happened, the versions of Peekaroo and iOS, and the iPhone model. Peekaroo sends it to our server so we can fix the problem. A report never contains your location, messages or contacts, and it is not linked to your account. Reports are deleted after 90 days.
How long we keep it
- Your latest position is kept until it is replaced or you delete your account.
- Individual location points are deleted automatically after 24 hours. They are kept for 31 days while Location history is on; turning it off deletes everything older than 24 hours at once.
- Logs of friend requests used against spam are deleted after 24 hours.
- An encrypted message waits on the server only until your friend's phone has received it, and is deleted after 30 days at most. Photos likewise; a photo that was never sent is deleted after 24 hours.
- Removing or blocking a friend deletes every message and photo still waiting between you at once.
- A phone's public keys are deleted when you sign out on it.
- A message you reported is erased 30 days after the moderators resolve the report.
- When you use hide mode, the period and the position you had before it are kept for 31 days, so points recorded while hidden are never shown later.
- If someone reported your account and you delete it, the report keeps only its text and a one-way fingerprint of your sign-in account, so a banned person cannot simply return. These are deleted after 90 days.
Deleting your data
You can delete your account at any time in the app (Settings, Delete account). Your profile, friends, locations and photo are erased immediately, along with your phones' keys and any messages still waiting to be delivered.
The waitlist
If you leave your email on peekaroo.app to hear when Peekaroo is out, we keep that address, the language of the page and the date. We use it only to send you the download link and never share it. To have it removed, write to support@peekaroo.app.
Where it is stored
On our server in Russia.
Age
Peekaroo is for people aged 16 and older.
